Role of Architects in
Bangalore
Who is an Architect?
Or what is the Definition of Architect? One who designs and
supervises the construction of the buildings and other structures. An architect is a person who is
trained in design, planning and oversight of the construction and other
structures and is licensed to practice architecture. To practice architecture means to render or offer service in
connections with the construction and design of the building and space within the
place surrounding the building which have as their principal purpose human use or occupancy. The term architect is
derived from the Latin word known as “architectus” which is derived from the Greek word known as “arkhitekton”
which means chief builder.
Why do we need Architects. . ?
People require places to wherein to.. live,
learn, play, worship, govern, meet, shop, eat- public and private spaces, outdoors and indoor, rooms and complexes;
towns, neighborhoods; cities and suburbs. Architects
are the professionals who are trained in the arts and science of design and they are
licensed to protect public health, welfare and safety, transform these requirements into concepts and then develop
the models into building images which could be build by others. In
designing buildings, the architects communicate with and help those who have
requirements such as users, clients and public as a whole. And those who would make the spaces which satisfy those requirements such as contractors and
builders, painters and plumbers, air conditioning mechanics and carpenters.
Whether the project is a city or a room, a the renovation of an old building or new
building, architects offer the professional services such as insights and ideas, technical knowledge and design, specifications and
drawings, administration, informed decision making and coordination- whereby an extraordinary range of
aesthetic, functional, technological, human, environmental, economic and safety factors are melded into a
consistent and proper solutions to the problems at hand.
Architects in bangalore Seekan feels that an architect truly designs? It begins with a client with the need
for a building, a project. To design and build this project, an architect follows the architectural design process.
This process begins with the schematic design phase, with the
architect first gaining an understanding the scope of the project to be built from the client. With the program
determined, the architect develops preliminary concepts and
ideas for the project and presents these to the client for approval or revision. In addition,
the architect researches zoning or other restrictions. Next is the design developments
phase. In design development, the initial concepts and ideas are further refined. The architect begins to determine
the building materials of the projects as well as detailing the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural
aspects of the project. The architect will formally present the project, at this stage of development, to the
client for approval. Next is the construction document phase.
During construction document phase, the architect produces detailed
drawings and specifications of the project to be used for constructions. These constructions documents
include all pertinent information necessary for construction. Next is the bid or negotiation phase.
In preparation for actual construction, as residential architects in bangalore should prepare
the bid documents. The bid documents include a number of documents for potential contractors to use in preparing
a bid (cost estimate) to construct the project. Once bids are received from contractors, the architects will
assist the client in evaluating and selecting the winning proposal. In the end, a contract is awarded to the
selected bidder, which allows construction to begin, next is the construction phase.
The Role of the
Architects
Bangalore architects feel that the term “architecture” includes
the great medieval cathedrals that were built in Western Europe, but there has be much debate over who had
responsibility for their design and status of that person. In
the past some writers argued that the monks as builders and as patrons designed these cathedrals. Others
stressed the role of the master mason and emphasized
mechanics of constructions, particularly of large and complicated churches, so that the
architect was seen in effect as a practicing engineer. Another interpretation was to see the creation of
cathedrals as the achievements of collectives of craftsmen contributing their individual skills and working
cooperatively. Today, historians recognize the important role of the higher clergy as patrons who, in
consultation with the architects, determined the form of the cathedrals. Documentary evidence from the 13th
century provides the names of such architects as: Jean d’Orbais and Bernard de Soissons who were two of the four
architects who worked at Reims Cathedral; Henry of Reyns at Westminster Abbey, London; and William of Sens.
Other evidence of the architect’s role can be seen in the relief sculpture at Worcester cathedral which shows an
architect with dividers and perhaps a monk, examining what may be an architectural drawings. Although the
available evidence and historians interpretations might change we still appreciate these structures as
architectures, whether or not an architect was involved.
There are great variations in the architect’s role. Since the late 20th century, in some
“design and build” projects the work of the architects has declined
to that of supplying outline drawings, the final detail being developed by the builder and developer during
construction. Some architects may be little more than technicians or draughts people, while at other end of the
scale they may act as a entrepreneurs and developers, particularly in developed countries and in some developing
countries. A developer raises capital, acquires and assembles the site, hire development team and when the project
is complete either sells or rents the building, often at considerable profit.
How the word
“Architect” was taken
The word architect derives from the Greek word
“archos” meaning ‘chief ‘and “tekton” meaning ‘builder’. Until quite recently –within the last 150
years the role of the architect included surveying and budilg as well as military and civil engineering. Vitruvius,
The Roman architect active in the first century BC, included a whole range of
examples of civil and military engineering in his book 10th volume, “De Architectua”. Similarly the important
renaissance architect Palladio included designs for civil engineering as well as for churches, palaces, farms and
villas in his Quattro Libri dell’ Architectura (1570). In china there are records of named architects dating from
the 10th century and the earliest suriving manual by Li Jie, Yingzao Fashi ( Sate building Standards) was publisded
in 1103. Li Jie worked as Superintendent for State Building in Ministry of Works from 1092 and was a distinguished
practicing builder as well as a writer. According to Hillenbrand, inscriptions on many early Islamic buildings give
the date of the building, the name of the patron and that of the architect but we know little else about the
architect role until the post-medieval period.
From the 17th century onwards in Britain, those who designed buildings were either wealthy
amateurs or highly skilled crafts people such as masons or carpenters. By 1788 John Soane described the
architect’s work as not only designing but making estimates,
directing works, controlling costs, acting as agent between the patron and builders and even promoting speculative
development. In 19th century the work of many architectural practices included surveying, providing bills of quantities, arranging leases and assessing rents, as well
as designing. With the decline of the trades in the 19th century and rise of the general contractor, such as Cubits
in London, architects took important role of supervising works on site and communicating to builders the full
details of the work required. These architects could be self employed or salaried and working for large
architectural practices, local authorities or commercial and industrial companies. The salaried architect’s role
was to design and provide specifications for all new buildings, advertise for tenders, enter into contracts,
measure and superintend the work, examine and certify building accounts, direct and superintend all repairs
and alterations to company, collect rents and prepare plans of company property and any additional property that
might be acquired, value all property being purchased or sold, attend meetings of committees and report on all
business.
In France the separation of civil and military engineering as disciplines distinct from architecture dates
from 1747 when a school of civil engineering was set up in Paris, organized by Rudolphe Perronet. In Britain the
Society of Civil Engineers began in 1771, the Surveyors’ Club in 1792 and Institution of Mechanical Engineering in
1847. Howard M. Colvin’s A Biographical Dictionary of British Architects 1600 to 1840, list over 2,000 architects.
Of these only about forty were involved in building in building the factories that we associate with the early
stages of the industrial revolution. It was the engineers who designed the machinery and it was mainly they who
designed the structures to house them. The reasons for these developments relate to the changing practice in the
mid-eighteenth century, the increasing division of labor, transformations in technology and the emergence of
new types of build-ing. In the process, what we understand by the by the term architect changed its meaning.
The counterpart to the heroic architect is the heroic building, presented as an individual
star. If a sufficient number of publications focus on the same building then the quantity and variety of other good
architecture will tend to be undervalued. The process becomes self-reinforcing and difficult to alert. With sufficient exposure to this
approach there is a danger that we almost cease to see the building concerned. The Eiffel Tower is so closely
linked in our minds with Paris that we cease to think about it as a structure built for a particular purpose and
greeted with courage initially. The Sydney Opera House, Australia, which was completed by Ove Arup in 1972, six
years after its architect Jorn Utzon left the project, was voted one of the wonders of the 20th century. It remains
one of the Australia’s most potent symbols. Tower Bridge in London and the Taj Mahal in Agra, Central India, are
other examples of cultural monuments that have become isolated from the context in which they developed. When we
visit we felt we were so familiar wit its image that the reality would have little impact on us. We were quite
unprepared for its sticking beauty and tranquil setting. We tend to view these cultural monuments uncritically and
yet accept the strength of their symbolism. The concept of the heroic buildings has been taken step further with
the development at the end of the 20t century, of the iconic building as a means of cultural and economic
regeneration and the promotion of tourism.
